30 Days of Fire – Day 29

meditation and raising our vibrations through positive thought

“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.” ~ Lao Tzu

Fire is the element of change.  Over the last 28 days we have spent time exploring the element of fire and gaining a greater understanding of how this element is both the inspiration and catalyst for transformation.  Fire is the one ready to turn our thoughts into the reality of our life.  It knows our state of mind dictates our life circumstance.  By raising our vibrations through positive thought, clear intention and a focused perspective, life transforms magically towards the direction of our dreams.

It starts with meditation.  Our energy frequency is changed through meditation.  Through meditation we are able to clear blocked energy caused by fear, doubt, insecurities, guilt and anger and begin living a joyous, happy life. One of my favorite teachers, David Stevens, has dedicated his entire life to teaching meditation.  He knows it stretches, strengthens, and balances all our inner abilities for personal awareness and growth.  I have attended many of his medication sessions and afterward I was able to focus as never had before.  So today I invite you meditate as you set out to manifest the life you’ve always wanted.

Today we return to the meditation we began with when we started this journey remembering the elements create a sacred circle around life, reminding us of the beauty here on earth, the potential of our spirit, and our human desires.

Read the words below and then close your eyes as you let the word guide you in your mediation.

Allow yourself time feel your connection to the Earth.  Imagine a bright channel going from your sits bones to the center of the Earth.  Feel the energy flowing from you to the core of the Earth and then back to you.  Next imagine a bright channel coming from the stars entering in at your crown and filling up your body with all the possibilities of the universe.

Now welcome in Fire.  The place of passion and creativity the place where unconditional love illuminates our path. Create an image for your hearts desire. Something you wish to increase in your life.  Enhance the image you’ve set in your mind.  Then

  • Adjust the brightness to bring it to clarity.
  • Adjust the color to enhance its brilliance.
  • If it’s a still picture, make it a movie adjusting the speed of the movie until it feels the most realistic.
  • Feel the feelings inside you; relishing how good it feels when you can create the body you want.
  • Know that this is already happening and true in your life.

Practice this mediation daily and know as your vibration changes to match your hearts desire it will come into focus with grace and ease if it is for your highest good.

30 Days of Fire – Day 28

how to overcome shyness and stage fright

STAGE FRIGHT

Fire just loves to be center stage and in the spotlight. Although they may not admit it and might get their feelings hurt if they are not the star, Fire people love to be seen and we all love to stare at the fire. Humans are fundamentally social creatures. We are hard wired to connect. Yet at some level, interacting with other people makes most, if not all of us uncomfortable. Regardless of whether you are introverted or extraverted, we can all relate to that feeling of shyness at some point in our lives. Socially, we tend to have the misconception that only introverts experience shyness, but that is not true. Shyness has more to do with being uncomfortable with one’s self, especially around other people.

This is me and singing and public. I remember as a young girl in middle school being asked to demonstrate the chorus of a song in choir. I got up in front of the group and started to belt out the song off key. My choir director stopped me and started to laugh and say I must have left my real voice at home to which the rest of the choir began to laugh. After that I became extremely shy to sing in public. When I was in college, I was singing along to a song when my roommate walked in with friends. I stopped and was mortified they had heard me. It wasn’t until I was much older that I was able to get over this shyness. I started to understand that I might not be ready for American Idol, but I passed the test for singing in the car or around the campfire. My stage fright was much more about being laughed at then concern that I was a terrible singer. Face it, when we walk out on stage we want to be admired and loved. When I let down my guard, I found out that people didn’t laugh at me when I sang, it was only an old tape being played by my ego that I needed to turn off.

Here are a few steps to help even the most timid get a little more comfortable with being in a crowd.

  • Get familiar with your shyness. Have you ever thought and really asked yourself why are you shy? Do you know what situations might trigger the feeling of shyness? It is important to understand your unique brand of shyness and how it manifests in your life. Then take a little time to see if the feelings are current or just old tapes playing in your mind.
  • Focus outwards.  It is not uncommon to feel uncomfortable when we walk into a room filled with people.  If you are focusing on how uncomfortable you are, you are not able to focus on the wonder of the situation or how others are enjoying your company.  Shyness can makes us self-absorbed.  Shy people can feel they have ‘nothing to say’ or don’t fit in.  Joining with others doesn’t mean you have to conform or be the life and soul of the party.  But really it is just this simple; people love you when you find them interesting and in turn they will become interested in you because of your interest in them.
  • Figure out what is comfortable for you. Understand what feels comfortable. We are not all the same.  Shy people might think that the goal is to be able to go to big parties and feel right at home. The real goal is to find people, communities and activities which bring out the best in you.  You can be just as equally social in settings where you connect with on a personal level as in larger social settings.

When we invite in the Fire element and are honest about our love for attention we understand that it really has much more to do with respect and acceptance. Our need to belong is what drives us to seek out stable, long lasting relationships with other people. It also motivates us to participate in social activities, spiritual groups, and community organizations.  By belonging to a group, we feel as if we are a part of something bigger beyond ourselves.  So today I am planning to roll the windows down and sign my heart out with my kids in the car.  How about you?  What are you going to let your fire shine bright and connect with the world?

30 Days of Fire – Day 27

The Next Great Adventure

OFF ON THE NEXT GREAT ADVENTURE

Fire is the element, which is well suited for the spontaneous side of life. With a sense of adventure and a zest for life Fire people are best suited for work where flare-ups of creative energy are tolerated. You just never know where they are going to end up. It isn’t that Fire people are taking to the open road with out a map. Rather, they are hard wired to trust their instincts. They are the one in the crowd who rely on gut thinking and trust their intuition. In a moments notice they are off and running. Often driven by a sudden burst of inspiration that thrust them into action. Those around them may have a hard time keeping up, understanding what they are up to or how they come up with their plans. Often the leaders in a group, they are the ones who shout “why not” and then take off on their next quest.

This was me as young person. Filled to the brim with fire energy and the confidence to match, there was not much that stopped me. That fiery energy kept moving. I found I was always on the go, enjoying anything that kept the heat up. Many times people would wonder what I was up to and could quite figure out what to make of my direction in life. Spontaneous but not reckless because I had learned to use the other elements to keep me in balance and complement my feisty fiery side. Earth keeps me rooted in the ground and reminded me that hard work is part of life and completing what I started is important. Air helps me to communicate what is in my head and heart making it easier for others to join and understand my direction. Water connects me to my emotions and the emotions of those around me helping me to be more compassionate and empathic. Don’t think this came naturally. Fire people have a tendency to dive head first in to life. The first step for me was I had to admit it, I could do better and at times I too, can screw up.

This impulsive nature of Fire doesn’t mean to trample on others, it just gets a little amped up when there is a chance they may loose their freedom. Fire always has its running shoes on, ready to fly off to the next adventure. Remember the Fire element is exciting when it entertains us, and liberating when it is our outlet to let off steam just don’t forget to check out those who happen to be catching your heat because they might not be having as much fun as you are! When Fire is willing to learn from the past, laugh at the ouches and embraces the “would have been better if…” life can manifest from a place of health and joy making each day and new adventure a joyous exploration.

30 Days of Fire – Day 26

spread a little kindness

SPREAD A LITTLE KINDNESS

A person who is appreciated will always do more than expected.  Do you agree? Do you buy into power of random acts of kindness?  My daughter was at Starbucks recently and was told the car in front of her had paid for her drink. She in turn did the same for the car behind her and then called me to tell me about how great it made her feel.  Some critics say the stories we hear on the news are just ploys to restore our faith in humanity.

I like to think examples of random kindness are the element of Fire showing up to warm our hearts and spread a little joy.  There is a part of all of us that really enjoys getting a little extra attention and being treated or spoiled in someway. There are many simple ways we can brighten another person’s day by doing something thoughtful, nice, and caring for them.  The kindness of others is powerful medicine for healing.

Beyond the surprise gestures of kindness there are many things that happen that often go unnoticed that make our day a little brighter or easier.  Perhaps it is the person who lets you go in front of them in the grocery store.  Maybe it is getting an email from a long lost friend that brings back wonderful memories. For me it is getting a text from my daughter just to say she loves me.  Even when the day seems challenging it helps to remember the simple things that made you smile or the things you did to lift the spirits of another.

Today, turn on your fire and brighten some ones day.  No act is too big or too small.  Find away share kindness with others.  Then, tonight before bed, recall the kindness you experienced.  Then, drift of to sleep with a warm heart and happy spirit because you have faith in humanity.

30 Days of Fire – Day 25

shambhala tradition and warriorship

BECOMING A WARRIOR

I read a post of a friend of mine on facebook who commented that she was called a “warrior.”  Like many, she has been working at not using words connected to fighting, war or violence.  In the Shambhala tradition, the definition of warriorship is fearlessness and gentleness. Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche said, “the first principle of warriorship is not being afraid of who you are.” I’m still working on that one – how about you?  What are the parts of you that you hide from the world because you are afraid of being who you are?  Imagine what would happen known that when you embrace your true self and heart you cultivated genuineness, confidence, humor, and dignity in daily life.

For the element of Fire, this is a path to embrace.  Balancing the yang and yin of a warrior is where fearlessness exists in let go and explore the self with openness and compassion.  This will give way to learning about reaction and triggers that occur in any situation.  These are often covering up vulnerabilities, self–doubt and feelings of shame.  When we are triggered or put in a situation that tests us when we are not aware the tendency is to defend and attack to protect what we try to keep hidden from the world.  By exploring our inner world and learning about our vulnerabilities we can move forward with a new sense of fearlessness that is gentle and kind.  This increases each of our wiliness to let those we love in closer and develop greater intimacy and connection.

The element of Fire carries the gift of life force, and inspires everybody to generate the same. In challenging times using this definition of warriorship from above, aids strong fire energies to trust their intuition and know that when the heat gets turned up that which is sincere and true will survive the flames.  Fire has the courage to stand in the face of deception, denial, and despair, and still hold the faith that we all can come out of the ashes into a new world.  Being able to see the world with an open-heart converts old ideas into ashes and creates the possibility for something new to emerge.

For now I’m keeping “warrior” as part of my language.  I encourage you to also define what warriorship means to you.

30 Days of Fire – Day 24

keeping the flame burning

KEEPING THE FLAME BURNING

“ Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.”
– The Buddha

The element of Fire, when it is young and just learning about power tends to be bold and perhaps a little self centered. You see the world is all about them and they are great at charming others to agree. As a small child they are often labeled as having a big ego and being self centered which often sticks with them into adult, which contributes to their natural shyness. Yes Leos can be quite shy. Fire also elicits jealousy for those in their wake. Few can keep up with people who have a lot of fire. Most importantly it is not there fault. It is not fun to be full of energy and then be shamed about who you are. For those with strong fire they will tell you they find just as many people being attracted to their fire, as those repelled by the heat. It is one of those difficult edges for those with lots of fire. Repeatedly leave them wondering “am I too much”, or “ am I to big.”

So here is some medicine for fire. First it is realizing that sharing your eternal flame will not diminish its life. The true power of fire is recognizing that fire does not burn itself out nor does sharing their flame. Fire people know that truth, love, and honesty are what heals and they can relieve the pain and challenge of any life situation. When fire learns to share and bring warmth and light to world with consciousness new opportunities and experiences can be shared with everyone.

Now it is your turn to set your intention for how you desire to share your spark for life. Today observe and reflect on your own experiences with the element of Fire. Release any story or judgments you have about being BIG and BOLD. Imagine what life would actually be like if you were. What might be different? What might you do? Then create an intention or mantra to guide you as you embrace and love the side of fire that is BIG and BOLD.

Here are a few examples to get you started:

  • I am filled with life force and have the ability to bring life into everything I do.
  • I embrace my power and spark for life and use it as a catalyst for positive change.

Now you try!

30 Days of Fire – Day 23

life lesson element of fire

One key to balancing the element of fire is becoming more perceptive about the world around you.  It is important become familiar with the places where your passion or power has captured you.  These are often the places where you feel alone, abandoned or criticized. These situations create your life story and then might lead to times in the future when your shield comes out to protect or the claws come out to defend or attack.  If a situation felt bad once your automatic pilot kicks to avoid a repeat of that experience.

Often we don’t take time to reflect to re -pattern and write a new story. Rather then going down the path of would of, should of, could of, today take some time to explore a few of the contradictory values that often challenge the element of fire.

  • How can you be strong and powerful while also remaining vulnerable and receptive?
  • How can you share your truth and heart even if it disrupts the current harmony?
  • Can you create a life that balances the desire for freedom and independence with connection and routine?
  • Is it possible to be both a leader and a follower?
  • How can we stand up and fight for ourselves and not be exiled from our community and friends?

If you have not guessed these questions are a few of the life lessons for the element of Fire. If you are a fire sign or have ample fire in you more then likely you have been labeled as hot headed when you are placed in a situation where you feel you are standing in the middle of a no win situation. For fire people they like to win. But life lessons are not about winning, they are about growing. So today take some time to reflect on each of these question. There is not a right answer merely a value to develop and an off button to find which embraces a greater awareness of about your behaviors and patterns.

30 Days of Fire – Day 22

hot in here

Fire knows that when they are hot they are hot and when they are not they are not. Fire people are notorious with sharing their heat with everyone. Fire is the element that is known for having a temper that burns every one in their path. While Fire people think they just explode without warning. However, if we can keep our awareness and not get captured by our emotions, we are able to track the physical warning signs in our body. The angrier you get, the more your body goes into overdrive. It is important to remember anger is a normal response and emotion. In the early days of humankind it was what kept us alive. It fueled the “fight or flight” system of the body. Becoming aware of your own personal signs that your temper is starting to boil allows you to take steps to manage your anger before it gets out of control.

Here are a few of the dynamics of anger

  • There are often strong emotions when we are in a situation that has familiarity or reminds us of a situation from the past.
  • It is difficult when we a trait in others we can’t stand in our self.
  • Old unresolved emotions from the past are often triggers for our current emotional state
  • When we are stressed and our body resources are down anger is just at the surface of every interaction.
  • We are rarely ever angry for the reasons we think.

Here are some simple tips for cooling down:

  • Focus on the anger physical sensations.  While it may seem counterintuitive, tuning into the way your body feels when you’re angry often lessens the emotional intensity of your anger.
  • Breath: Deep, slow breathing helps counteract rising tension. The key is to breathe deeply from the abdomen, getting as much fresh air as possible into your lungs.
  • Count to ten.  Let your rational mind catch up with your feelings. If you still feel out of control by the time you reach ten, start counting again.
  • Move your body.  It releases pent-up energy so you can approach the situation with a cooler head.
  • Use your senses.  Take advantage of the relaxing power of your sense of sight, smell, hearing, touch, and taste. You might try listening to music or picturing yourself in a favorite place.
  • Stretch or massage areas of tension.  Roll your shoulders if you are tensing them, for example, or gently massage your neck and scalp.

30 Days of Fire – Day 21

Walking In the Sun

How’s your energy today? Did you create a few play lists?

While music is one of the easier ways to understand how energy works.  There are many others ways to get the element of Fire energized and flowing.  You see the trouble with Fire people is that when the element is out of balance you might become a couch potato or go to the other extreme and be addicted to moving and exercise.  The extreme nature of Fire is NOT a good thing.  Fire needs to learn how to energize up or down.  So, let’s just start a running list of some easy ways to move and slow energy.

Let the Sun In.  Nothing better then waking up in the morning and opening the curtains to let the natural light of the sun fill the room.  This is a great way to become energized first thing in the morning.

Taking a walk.  I do this year round.  Being out in nature and gently moving is a great way to warm the body and get your circulation flowing.  For the few times when I have a lot of build up energy a nice run is one of the best ways I know to release that energy.

Scream. Yes I have been known to scream a time or two.  Think about when you have been on a roller coaster or on a long drive and you have opened up the windows and just screamed at the top of your lungs.  Screaming isn’t only for when you are mad or scared.  Go to any playground and listen to the all the children screaming with delight as they come down the slide.

Speaking of playgrounds. Go out and play – Just for fun.  Go to the park and swing as high as you can.  Sit on the marry-go-round and enjoy feeling the wind in your hair. The older we get forget to go out for recess.

Breath.  If you need to turn down your energy slow deep breathing is just the thing.  I do this all the time.  When I am facilitation a group meeting and things get tense I often take a long deep breath and without a single cue the group will do the same.  This just slows everything down and helps people come back into their bodies.

Now it is your turn.  Think about a few things you can do to increase your fire energy and a few things you can do to slow it down.
