Getting The Most Out Of Each Day – Day 28 – 30 Days of Earth

productive day

When it comes to bringing balance and stability into your world, every sensible Earth person knows that it is a simple equation:  1). Taking an active approach to the doing, 2). Maintaining a positive outlook, and 3). Finding time to just be.

Lets break this down into steps.   An active approach simply means getting things done.  It is making sure each day you check a few things off of your to do list.   Make sure it is a little of both the urgent to-dos and the task that are getting you to your dreams.   Maintaining a positive outlook is merely looking at how you live your life and noticing how your habits and perspectives influence your feelings and actions.   Without a positive outlook the word becomes dark and overwhelming.    Finding time to just be is often challenging for the Earth element, but it is important to be sure that each day you are finding time for you.  Whether it is through meditation, a walk, going to a yoga class or just playing, everyone needs time off for good behavior.

Here are a few tips to get you started on your way to making the best of each day:

  • Plan each day. Planning your day can help you accomplish more and feel more in control of your life. Write a to-do list, putting the most important tasks at the top. Keep a schedule of your daily activities to minimize conflicts and last-minute rushes.
  • Prioritize your tasks. Time-consuming but relatively unimportant tasks can consume a lot of your day. Prioritizing tasks will ensure that you spend your time and energy on those that are truly important to you.
  • Take time to appreciate life and the blessing in your world.   Try ending each day by writing an appreciation and dropping it in a jar on your nightstand.  Over time you will see your jar fill up and begin to let in the giving and abundant world, which we all have access to.
  • Evaluate how you’re spending your time. Keep a diary of everything you do for three days to determine how you’re spending your time. Look for time that can be used more wisely.  We all have those time eaters that just have become habits that could use some refreshing.
  • Take the time you need to do a quality job. Doing work right the first time may take more time upfront, but errors usually result in time spent making corrections, which takes more time overall.
  • Break large, time-consuming task into smaller task.   Work on them for a few minutes at a time.  If you really dread the task spend 10 minutes each day. Once you get started you may find you can finish it.  If you need a break take one – stress and frustration can derail you.
  • Get plenty of sleep, have a healthy diet and exercise regularly. A healthy lifestyle can improve your focus and concentration, which will help improve your efficiency so that you can complete your work in less time.
  • Take time to visual your personal goals and do something to move those goals forward each day.

By creating a daily routine the Element of Earth stands on stable ground thus minimizing stress and improve our quality of life.

Have You Done Your Spring Cleaning? – Day 27 – 30 Days of Earth

time for spring cleaning

I use to have a work colleague who depended on me for all of his Earth.  He was not very organized and had a hard time keeping track of the to-do’s on the projects we worked on.  We would always meet in my office and that was a good thing.  You see his office was one of those places that you might see on your favorite make over show.   Papers everywhere.   In fact, during a fire drill the fire department listed his office as a fire hazard.  Then the fun began – he had the task of going through and getting everything in order.  It may have looked like a total mess, but he know were every piece of paper was and never had trouble finding just what he was looking for – does this sound like you or some one you know?   If you have ample Earth these are the people and spaces that can make you crazy.

How are you with life’s little messes?  Can you leave a mess?  Are you able to laugh at your own idiosyncrasies of order and not get to wrapped up in what others are telling you?  It is important during the spring-cleaning season to let go of our personal definition of order.  We do share the planet and our spaces with other beings.  Whether yours is having everything in meticulous order or you live on the other side of the equation – thinking that a laundry basket filled with clean clothes is a perfect substitution for a closet, trying to work your way towards middle ground is sometimes easier said than done.

So before you take out your broom and dust cloth – spend some time thinking about balance.  Your home and offices is where you spend a significant amount of your day.  Focus on creating a space that is well-organized and a nourishing environment for your daily life.   Either way take a step back and smile at the messes and try a new way of tackling them with joy.

Whose Team Are You On? – Day 25 – 30 Days of Earth

team work is the key

Do you know?   We are all on teams whether we like it or not.  Your first memory of being on a team may come from early in your childhood.   Playing games in the neighborhood or in gym class at school.   Then came the team projects in later years. You remember those assignments – working with a group to complete a task.  Were you the one who did all the work? Did you lose sleep wondering if everyone was going to do his or her share?   That’s the challenge with teamwork – it is great when the team is working together – but not so great when they are not.

That is not much different when it comes to the elements of astrology.  We have access to all four – Water, Air, Earth and Fire.  But sometimes we don’t access all of them.   This month we have been talking about Earth.  But you can’t have Earth without the others.   Think about it in nature.  Without water the earth becomes dry and brittle.  Without air there would be no fire to warm us on a cold night.

It is easy to favor an element or forget to use another.    Today’s challenge is simple.  Spend some time thinking about how your Earth element works with the other elements.   Here are a few words that describe the other elements to get you started.   You may have other words that resonate to you so add them to the list.

  • Water:  Emotions, Compassion and Relationship
  • Air:  Mind, Voice and Wisdom
  • Fire:  Life Force, Energy and Courage

Now take some time noticing the flow and intersections.  Does your practicality cause you to avoid emotions of relationships?   Do you find yourself not speaking your mind when asked about what you are doing?   This is a perfect way to begin to notice your habits and preferences. Set a few goals about trying ways to balance the elements – Maybe you might start an exercise program because you feel like you lack energy.   Perhaps you might read the instructions booklet when doing your next home project.  Whatever you do – life is easier when your elements are working like a team.

Out Of The Office – Day 24 – 30 Days of Earth

Out Of The Office - At The Beach

Could you tell?  That’s right I have been out of the office.   Yes that was me the one with the laptop sitting at the beach.    That’s how it goes with Earth.   They have a hard time playing.   Being born with 5 planets in Earth moved me to the top of the list.   But the nice thing is the lessons I have learned as my Earthy self has aged.    Here are a few that are on the top of my list:

Lesson One:  Earth people can find time to play but our play may look a little different.  Yes I am the one at the beach with my family who is making sure everyone has a chair, sun lotion on and is well hydrated.  But I am still playing and having fun.  I have learned that when I turn off the list in my head the world doesn’t end and believe it on not I am actually enjoying spontaneity.  I just am sure to pack my first aid kit and raincoat – still haven’t been able to give up my need to be prepared.

Lesson Two:  Earth people are all about loyalty – true to a fault that’s Earth.   Over time Earth learns that loyalty is a tricky beast.  Earth comes into balance when they understand that loyalty to self is where it starts.   Only way to keep sure footing is to be clear about where you are putting your feet – and understand your purpose for doing so.

Lesson Three:  Being able to nurture and support you must be a priority.   This is where Earth’s love of list comes in handy.   I now have my to do list of treats for me.   At first this was a little hard but Earth likes to be in service and that includes service to self.

What life lessons have you been taught by the element of Earth? That is your assignment for today.  Sit and reflect about what Earth has taught you.  Write it down and share one with us on facebook.

Day 14 – 30 Days of Earth – Who Made Up Those Rules?

Always Follow The Rules

Stay committed to your decisions, but stay flexible in your approach.

So which one are you . . . The person who follows all the rules or the one who sees rule as something that slows you down?   People with lots of the Earth element have the tendency to be obsessive follower of rules and have minimal flexibility with game plans.

Rules come from different places – they might be the household rules.  We all remember those, be home before dark, don’t wear a hat at the dinner table, or open the door for elders.  Some of them make sense.  Being home before dark when you were a child was all about safety.   Some were about social norms such as wearing a hat at the table.  Others were guidelines on manors or kindness.    Then there are the rules which area actually guidelines you set for yourself.

Lets face it; we all like our own rules –what’s not to like they are yours.  There is a quality of the admiration for those who follow the rules. We have heard it “she is solid as a rock” or “he has both her feet on the ground.”   But there is another side that is not – when the rule following turns to an obsession and comes off as controlling.   We often don’t even know when we are doing it.  In fact, the obsession is frequently more about creating safety and security.    You can always tell when you are venturing in the obsession zone.    Your inner voice starts reminding you that if you follow the rules everything be ok –then it has this habit of reminding you that your rules work for you so they should work for everyone else.  At that point flexibility goes out the window.

Earth becomes more balanced as an element when it learns how to be more flexible.  To survive and thrive, we will need to be flexible.  The best way to fight off rigidity is by continually stretching yourself by taking on new challenges.   It is also important to learn how to overcome irrational fears associated with change and control.  When you do you will boost your self-confidence.  Earth is at its highest when it know how to perform with a healthy, relaxed pace; Is able to respects others individuality which includes their rules, schedules and quirks; and knows how to indulges in spontaneity and play.

Day 12 – 30 Days of Earth – Here Is Your Permission Slip

Permission Slip“Dream and give yourself permission to envision a You that you choose to be.” – Joy Page

Do you remember in school how excited you became when the teacher handed out a permission slip? It meant you were going on an adventure.   We all need permission – it is the notion of

Getting it  . . . Giving it  . . . Taking it

Take a moment to ask yourself what do you need to give yourself permission to do?  Earth sometimes takes us down the rabbit hole of hard work high standards, and impeccable practicality.  Often, we then don’t think we have permission to do anything else.

Today you are to write yourself a permission slip to be adventurous and try out something new.   If you are a little more courageous create a Permission Box and fill it up mini-permission slips so you can draw an new one each morning before you start your day.

Here is a list of permission slip to get you started:

  • Permission to be silly
  • Permission to ask for what you want
  • Permission to make a mess
  • Permission to play
  • Permission to have fun
  • Permission to drop the ball     Permission to say yes
  • Permission to celebrate
  • Permission to say “I don’t know”
  • Permission to get comfortable
  • Permission to bask in my accomplishments
  • Permission to ask for help

Don’t forget to let us know on facebook what you gave yourself permission to do

Day 10 – 30 Days of Earth – Is This On Your List?

Organization

“Busy hands can rest a turbulent mind”  –  Joyce Sequichie Hilfer

Thought today it would be good to start by evaluating how much earth you actually have.   For those of you who are familiar with astrology, if your sun, rising or Saturn is in one of earth signs – Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn – you have some earth in you!

Earth people will relate to the following:

  • People can rely on me and think of me as dependable
  • I like to clean and organize.  Often this is what I do when I am upset
  • People think of me as grounded and practical
  • I work hard.  My work is thorough, methodical and deliberate
  • I am goal oriented and I work for results
  • I am often in charge
  • I like being in control

Got to hand it to you earth people you know how to get things done!  There is nothing better then opening up a closet and having everything in the right place, color coded and sorted by season.  Or is there?  Hmmmm – everyone might not agree.   You might be standing back and admiring your work and then someone walks in and put something away in the closet in the wrong place.   Grrrrr – can’t they see the patterns and order?

If you have a lot of earth you might be the person who can act a little like a know it all and those around you might find you stubborn and not open to change. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with hard work and know how to do it.   Taking charge and getting it done may be your way of helping out or making sure there is order in the world.  However, when keeping busy is your way to avoid expressing emotions and feelings it is time to stop and figure out what is really going on.

A friend of mine who works for the highway department once told me “ you can’t build your way out of a traffic jam.”  Likewise you can’t work your way out of feelings.   They just are – and avoiding emotions or feelings is no different then a road a rush hour – they only get backed and create a traffic jam.    Now that shirt that was put back in the closet in the wrong place brings you to the boiling point.   This is where water meets earth.  Too much water we turn to mud . . . too little water we become a desert.

So this is the practice for today.  As you go through your day keep track of what you do when a feeling or emotion comes up.  Can you pause and take a deep breath? Or do you try to figure it out and fix it? Or do you get busy doing something so you can distract yourself from what you are feeling?    There is not a right answer, it is only about increasing your awareness and finding balance between the doing (Earth) and being (Water).

Intention 2:

I can accept my fate and know that every problem is not meant to be solved or fixed.

Day 9 – 30 Days of Earth – Have I Got A Treat For You!

Thank You!So tell me did you open this email up as quickly as you could so you got receive the goodie?

Or were you a little skeptical and thought “there must be a catch?”  If you found yourself being doubtful, welcome to the quality of earth that is often over focused on the details and expectations that it has stopped living life fully and enjoying the harvest that exist by just being alive.

So today’s challenge is simple.  Sometime today give yourself a treat.   Find a way to spoil yourself and thank your body for all it has done to get you through the week.   One expectation for this gift is that it has to be  . . . wait for it . . .

ALL ABOUT YOU

We started this week focusing on the relationship with yourself so lets see what you learned.   Can you do something just for you, thank yourself for how amazing you are and most importantly HAVE SOME FUN by not doing.

Let us know how you decide to treat yourself – that will be very helpful for those of us who are having a hard time figuring out just how to do that.

Happy Friday!

Day 8 – 30 Days of Earth – It’s Getting Hot In Here

Time to turn up the heat a little and think about our comfort zone.  Life here on earth is not simple.  The rules and game can change rapidly, yet the Earth element has a need for routine and order that might look like a compulsion to others.   Nothing wrong with predictability and routine, however being willing to take risks, step out of our comfort zone and into the discomfort of uncertainty is the sweet spot of where growth and transformation happens.

We have all been there – maybe when you moved to a new school as a child or perhaps when you started a new job.   Standing at the door you experiences the thrill and excitement of the change and then frozen when you reached to open the door.    It's Getting Hot In Here!Yet you walked in and in doing so you learned that in giving up the security of what you know you can create new opportunity.    It is where we build capability, learn new skills and increase our confidence.   Each time we do this, we expand the boundary of our ‘Courage Zone’ and gain confidence to take on bigger challenges in the future.

In life we must continually assess whether we are letting our fear of failure or uncertainty keep us from taking the actions, and engaging in the conversations, that will move us forward and make the impact we want.

Today’s Questions:

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do I avoid being vulnerable and therefore avoid exposer to new things?
  • Do I seek new challenges or just stick to what I know?
  • Am I willing to speak up for what I want and believe or just say what I think others want me to say?

Take a little time to reflect and then report back to the group on facebook by answering this question:

To reach my dream of  __________, I am going to step into the courage zone by letting go of _____________.

With too much earth you run the risk of staying in the comfort zone, which can take away your natural creativity, sense of adventure and opportunity to grow!
